This year's Family Music Day is to be held on Saturday 10 May 2008
at Denefield School, Long Lane, Tilehurst, Reading RG31 6XY.
It is devoted to the theme:
"Singing and making melody to the Lord"
In the afternoon, you can choose 2 workshops from the following:
- Improve your singing (Margaret Green). We’ll try some ways of helping our voices to be both joyful and beautiful, and to blend with each other in praise and worship.
- Accompanists' notebook (David Dunstan). Accompanying singers is not easy. We think about how we can improve our technique and some of the pitfalls to be avoided.
- Psalms are for singing! (John Greenwood). The psalms compel us to look honestly at ourselves and our worship. How were these poems born and how were they sung? How can we make them our own and sing them today?
- Spiritual composing (Mark Robinson). We try some ways of expressing ourselves through musical composition. Don’t worry – no musical training is required!
- Christadelphian hymns and hymn writers (Edward Dorricott). We look at some of the contributions of talented brethren and sisters who have enriched our communal worship over the years.
- Orchestra rehearsal (double session) (Phil Mundey)
Crèche and children’s activities
Booking is essential! Booking forms have been sent to ecclesias within a 200-mile radius, or you can download a copy.
Practical arrangements
- You must book in advance. Otherwise there will be no meals for you and no guarantee of a place at any of the workshop sessions!
- There is no booking fee. A collection will be taken during the day to cover expenses. A guide price will be given at the time, and is expected to be in the region of £5 per person.
- A buffet lunch and tea will be provided.
- You will need to bring a Christadelphian Hymn Book and Praise the Lord.
- A crèche will be available during the day. Children’s activities will be organised during the workshop sessions for junior and senior age groups. Please indicate children’s ages on the booking form.
- You will be able to attend two workshop sessions (unless you select the orchestra workshop, which is a double session). We ask that you give a third choice in case it is not possible to allocate you your first two choices.
- If you wish to play an instrument in the orchestra, please give details on the booking form. If you play a transposing instrument, you will need to be able to transpose from the music, but we will try to tell you beforehand which hymns we are playing. You will need to bring a music stand.
